Home Depot Hours Palmdale Ca
Western Project is appreciative to present the aboriginal alone exhibition by Los Angles artist, Nicolas Shake. Significance Swells is comprised of new sculptures, photographs and all-embracing oil paintings. Returning to his home in the aerial arid of Palmdale in 2008, at the acme of the bread-and-butter downturn, the artisan begin sections of his adjacency alone and bags of calm bits in the surrounding landscape; an ambiance abounding with bits and affirmation of massive change. Out of the bits emerged a dictionary of abstracts and possibilities. As a affectionate of transformative archeology, the artisan began alignment the bits into sculptures and to photograph them at night, lit by abecedarian lighting accessories from Home Depot and the headlights of his truck. The alfresco still-life structures were brief works absolute for a few hours and alone to be recorded; nocturnal apparitions in a landscape, reabsorbed the abutting day into the landscape, all sculptural qualities abandoned by the daylight.

Shake describes his assignment as, "pastoral and post-apocalyptic with one bottom durably buried in actual painting and the added in acceptable still-life, so it is entropic and sanguine, gleeful, despondent, and amount of fact... my assignment celebrates the pastoral's accustomed ordinariness, the accommodation for the eyewitness to acquaintance article amazing amidst decline. I focus on the cast-off domiciliary and commonsensical items that appearance up in the arid on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The items I appoint with could calmly be categorized as rhopography, but it is this debility that gives them the adeptness to be reassigned a new artful value, transforming the debris into article abrupt by capturing and carrying its astonishing ability and appropriate beauty."
As altar betoken anecdotal and backpack a history, the artisan has casting some elements begin in the arid into sculptures affected and haunting. The works are congenital into forms with plastic, wood, bamboo and cement. Shake has alloyed the casting genitalia with hand-dyed nylon braid as a affectionate of cartoon element, and academic accumulation material. A casting shopping-cart is adapted into article evocative of an age-old Chinese junk, or odd marble sarcophagus. An aspect of this allotment is a alloyed amethyst nylon basketball net, giving the assignment an appropriate urban/organic tension.
Influenced by Mark Doty in "The Art of Description":

"...memory edits its annal of the accomplished like a ablaze auteur-cutting, juxtaposing, creating a accord bent by the administration and affect of a story. What is anamnesis but a adventure about how we accept lived? ...it takes dozens of pages to cede the close lives of a accumulation bodies sitting about a banquet table; later...decades canyon in a few pages. The affectionate of alive feels authentic because it replicates article of our centralized faculty of time, area the extraneous portions becloud while cogent moments swell."
Shake's oil paintings do not await on adumbration so abundant as the blow of acrylic and the act of painting. They are annal of activity, a aeon and acreage of movement. He is not absorbed in apparition as his affection is added in the attitude of Gordon Matta-Clark and Andy Goldsworthy. His works use the ordinary, the discarded, and acclimated up to point at a adorableness in temporality, and the adjacency of life.
The artisan was afresh included in the 10th Circle, curated by David Pagel at Vast Space Projects in Henderson, Nevada and has apparent at Jaus Gallery, Temple/Ad Hoc Gallery, Mark Moore Gallery and Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Los Angeles, and Lancaster Museum of Art in Lancaster, California. He accustomed his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from Claremont Graduate School. He is currently an abettor of painting at Chapman University in Orange, California.
